Today's Highlight in History:
On Nov. 21, 1922, Rebecca L. Felton of Georgia was sworn in as the first woman to serve in the U.S. Senate. (Felton, a Democrat appointed by Gov. Thomas Hardwick to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Thomas E. Watson, served only a day before Watson's elected successor, Walter F. George, took office.)
On this date:
In 1789, North Carolina became the 12th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
In 1877, inventor Thomas A. Edison announced the invention of his phonograph.
In 1942, the Alaska highway across Canada was formally opened.
In 1964, New York's Verrazano Narrows Bridge opened.
In 1969, the Senate voted down the Supreme Court nomination of Clement F. Haynsworth, the first such rejection since 1930.
In 1973, President Nixon's attorney, J. Fred Buzhardt, revealed the existence of an 18-and-a-half-minute gap in one of the White House tape recordings related to Watergate.

And in the short news, my better half (hi zibblsnrt) claims that today is the world became a better place.
I think he's biased. Because all that Today in History stuff neglects a piece:
At 4:44 AM Tuesday November 21st, 1978, a child, born to James and Tresa Templeton of Redding, California, their first, a girl.
...they're still trying to figure out how twenty four years passed so fast, and how exactly that first born child got to be a graduate student at Cal. And there's something to be said for that first born still being here.
Happy birthday to me. :)
