Mardi Gras 2006

It's a rough poem, but I figured I'd share.

Thoughts and comments are welcome.

Mardi Gras 2006

Today is Fat Tuesday
in the year two thousand six.
Before the season of Lent,
a large, crazy party. This city
lassiez le bon temps roulez.
Just as they have done
Every year.

Today is also six months
Since a whirling dervish of a girl
Rained calamity on this city --
this region --
So much that we feared
Those good times
never would roll again.

The somber number today:
One thousand four hundred twenty.
And they're still counting.
A number so low
But yet higher than
It should have been.
We mourn them all.

It is Mardi Gras
in the Crescent City
They remember that girl
Her handicraft remains around them
They work to erase
The remnants of her dance
As they rebuild.

Yet, they are still here.
They are determined to party
Just like it was before.
Brave people, they are.
Honor the dead,
Remember the living.
Let the good times roll.
